Ìjìnlẹ̀ Labs Awarded NIH Fogarty International Grant for Ethnopharmacology Research
We are thrilled to announce that Ìjìnlẹ̀ Research Labs has been awarded a $2.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fogarty International Center. This funding will support a three-year research program focused on the standardization and clinical validation of West African antimalarial botanicals.
The Research Program
The grant will fund comprehensive phytochemical profiling of six plant species traditionally used across the Sahel and Guinea savanna zones for malaria treatment. Our team will employ high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to isolate and characterize bioactive compounds.
Partnership Network
This project is a collaboration between Ìjìnlẹ̀, the University of Ibadan Department of Pharmacognosy, and the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania. Together, we will establish standardized extraction protocols that can be replicated across laboratories in the Global South.
What This Means
This grant represents a significant milestone in our mission to bring scientific rigor to traditional African medicine. The funding will directly support 12 researchers across three countries and contribute to at least 6 peer-reviewed publications.
